The right island will make any kitchen both functional and beautiful. They can form the center of a kitchen design. The challenge is to learn where you can find custom kitchen islands to meet your needs at an affordable price. The answer is to work with the right cabinetmaker. Many cabinet makers charge a small fortune to build an island that meets your needs. Most pre-designed and pre-fabricated kitchen island designs will not provide the combination of features and dimensions you want. Your options are to use something you do not want or to pay for the custom island. There is a very good option. By working with a cabinetmaker that has a relationship allowing him or her to buy cabinets directly from a manufacturer, it is possible to customize affordable standard-size cabinets into the island you want for your kitchen. Even the kitchen island cabinet offered by the manufacturer can be customized for your needs.
Regardless of which kitchen island designs you choose, you can make it look fancy and dress it up by adding nice lighting over the counter and adding splashes of color in the kitchen in the form of flowers or pieces of art. Even a rather drab looking stainless steel kitchen island can be made to look spectacular. It is important to make a note of the size of your kitchen as well as choose a color palette based on the furnishings of your home when confirming on the kitchen island designs. If its functionality, looks and hassle-free maintenance are attributes you are looking for then you should go for the stainless steel design.
3. A second kitchen sink can be included on the kitchen island. Use a sink that is deep enough for washing large pots and pans, and consider equipping the kitchen island with a trash compactor, garbage disposal, recycle bin and even a dishwasher. Cleanup will be much easier when these appliances are close by the sink. 4. Allow adequate countertop space on both sides (left and right) of the kitchen island if a sink or cooktop will be used. Include at least 15 inches of countertop space on each side, and if your kitchen is large enough, allow even more space. You can never have too much countertop space in a kitchen. Also, rounded countertop corners help protect everyone from bad bruises -- this is true about all kitchen countertop corners.
2. You can add food preparation surfaces underneath the island. While food preparation is part of any kitchen, its not the most thrilling sight for others to see. Fortunately, you can create levels of preparation areas underneath the islands surface. This allows you to do whatever slicing, mixing, and other activities you need to do-without everyone seeing the mess. 3. Provide enough clearance. That should be enough room between your island and kitchen cabinets. Specifically, three to four feet is usually adequate. If youre in doubt, provide more space, so that your family will be comfortable around the kitchen island table. In addition, when you put in your island, make sure you measure so that you sure you have enough clearance. This will help prevent mistakes or accidents because there are things that are too close to the kitchen island.
Kitchen islands are a design feature that can make your kitchen much more efficient. But, a word of caution: this is one design item where you should definitely consult with a design expert while you are designing your kitchen. Unless you have lots of experience in kitchen design, or interior decorating, it is hard to get a good feel for how an island will work. In order to make a kitchen island work, you need a fairly large kitchen space to ensure enough space around the island to move freely. If your space is large enough to accommodate an island, then a kitchen island will provide more counter space and more storage space. In an extremely large kitchen you can create two separate work triangles, or reduce the size of the main work triangle, increasing the efficiency of your design. To help you with the design element of incorporating an island an experienced designers input will be invaluable. The arrangement of the appliances and service supplies may change when you add an island into your design.
