Before deciding on any type of kitchen design you need to be certain of the shape. In addition traditional rectangle or square a rounded or oval island can bring a whole new look to your kitchen. Whether in a single row kitchen or as part of an L-shape design the kitchen island will be the heart of the whole kitchen. Some basic kitchen design ideas need to be considered. Kitchen Islands can have some additional design options like breakfast bars and installed appliances which can achieve the triangle design of sink-stove-refrigerator that is considered one of the top kitchen design ideas.
You can also combine two or more surface heights in your custom island. In a large island, it is possible to combine a food preparation area, a quick-access snack and beverage area, and a casual dining area, each at a different level above the floor. If you are designing a highly functional gourmet cooks kitchen, you might be planning several distinct work areas in your kitchen. Your island can form the third point of multiple work triangles and connect the parts of the kitchen, or it can separate the areas of the kitchen. For example, an island with a gas range can connect a baking area a clean-up area and a food-preparation area for salad making, etc.
Kitchen islands are the life and soul of a kitchen! Why? Well, not only can they help increase the efficiency of your kitchen with the many choices of fixtures, accessories and designs available, they can also bring along lots of fun to further enhance ones cooking experience, not to mention the style and look it will provide for your kitchen. Kitchen islands usually come in wood, stainless steel, granite or marble designs. Choosing ready-made kitchen islands for your homes are a good way to incorporate islands into your homes but with ready-made islands one cannot specifically find a design that suits every need of your kitchen.
If you have a smaller kitchen space, that doesnt mean that you cant add island space to your kitchen. A portable kitchen island or food preparation cart can add usable surface area in a smaller space. You can store the cart out of the way most of the time, and then roll it out for use during meal preparation. The movable island can match your kitchen cabinets or it can have a completely different style, the choice is yours. Kitchen islands are a tricky item to successfully add to your kitchen design, but well worth considering when you are remodeling your kitchen. You may be surprised at the increase in convenience in meal preparation and added counter space an island will provide. But, it is hard to visualize the space required and the best size for any island addition, so be sure you get all the information you need to make the best decision for your kitchen.
Another con is space. While it was mentioned previously that there are rolling islands, if space is at a premium, an island may just not be practical. There is nothing more frustrating to a cook than having something "in the way" when you are trying to prepare meals for your family, or yourself. If your kitchen is small, while you may long for extra storage space and countertop, an island might not be the best solution. One con that was noted was placement of an island can disrupt the flow of a kitchen. The work-flow in a kitchen revolves around a triangle of refrigerator, sink, and range. An island can actually disrupt the flow of this working triangle, causing more issues in preparation, cooking, and cleanup. It is important to have placement so there is not a dead zone in the kitchen, or an area of countertop that goes unused due to the placement of the island. The bottom line on having a kitchen island would be to determine the size of your kitchen and the amount you are comfortable with spending. There are numerous kitchen designers who can help with the decisions.
