Use kitchen island ideas to better understand how to create a more functional and comfortable kitchen. Using custom kitchen islands means having the most appropriate island for your home and kitchen area based on your kitchen space and your needs. Kitchen island ideas take us back to the farmhouse kitchen, even back to medieval times when a large worktable was used to do most of the preparation work. Besides meal preparation, the kitchen can become a gathering area for family and friends if there is enough space. Since so much happens in the kitchen on a regular basis, getting the layout right is important. The kitchen island can serve as an additional eating area, and food preparation can easily be done there. In a large kitchen, the kitchen island can shorten the distances within the working triangle (sink, refrigerator and range or cooktop) and make it more efficient.
Another con is space. While it was mentioned previously that there are rolling islands, if space is at a premium, an island may just not be practical. There is nothing more frustrating to a cook than having something "in the way" when you are trying to prepare meals for your family, or yourself. If your kitchen is small, while you may long for extra storage space and countertop, an island might not be the best solution. One con that was noted was placement of an island can disrupt the flow of a kitchen. The work-flow in a kitchen revolves around a triangle of refrigerator, sink, and range. An island can actually disrupt the flow of this working triangle, causing more issues in preparation, cooking, and cleanup. It is important to have placement so there is not a dead zone in the kitchen, or an area of countertop that goes unused due to the placement of the island. The bottom line on having a kitchen island would be to determine the size of your kitchen and the amount you are comfortable with spending. There are numerous kitchen designers who can help with the decisions.
You can also combine two or more surface heights in your custom island. In a large island, it is possible to combine a food preparation area, a quick-access snack and beverage area, and a casual dining area, each at a different level above the floor. If you are designing a highly functional gourmet cooks kitchen, you might be planning several distinct work areas in your kitchen. Your island can form the third point of multiple work triangles and connect the parts of the kitchen, or it can separate the areas of the kitchen. For example, an island with a gas range can connect a baking area a clean-up area and a food-preparation area for salad making, etc.
Kitchen Islands are also available in many styles and designs such as: Contemporary, Traditional, American Folk and French Country. Many kitchen islands can be created with natural woods such as, Northern Maple, Red Oak, Poplar, Birch, and plantation-grown exotic woods. Other kinds of kitchen islands are constructed of stainless steel, or wood combined with stainless steel. Island tops are usually hard wood, granite or marble, stainless steel, or butcher block, which is usually Hardrock Maple fastened end or edge grain to prevent cracking and warping. What to Include in a Kitchen Island Some features to consider in adding a kitchen island can include the oven, kitchen exhaust hood, electric switches and outlets, and storage and shelves. Finally as for the material of the island counter while you could use the same material for the island counter as you have for the kitchen counter it is possible to consider different materials to create an more interesting look.
If you have a smaller kitchen space, that doesnt mean that you cant add island space to your kitchen. A portable kitchen island or food preparation cart can add usable surface area in a smaller space. You can store the cart out of the way most of the time, and then roll it out for use during meal preparation. The movable island can match your kitchen cabinets or it can have a completely different style, the choice is yours. Kitchen islands are a tricky item to successfully add to your kitchen design, but well worth considering when you are remodeling your kitchen. You may be surprised at the increase in convenience in meal preparation and added counter space an island will provide. But, it is hard to visualize the space required and the best size for any island addition, so be sure you get all the information you need to make the best decision for your kitchen.
