Once restricted to the local public house in the United Kingdom and Ireland and to the imitators in North America, 30 and 24 bar stools are now common place household furniture. Not only have these stools entered into the residential furniture market but they have broken out of a centuries old mold. For centuries bar stools seemed to be of uniform size and material. Times have changed. For literally centuries, stools found in bars were 30 inches in height. Of course, the height was specifically engineered so that a person could comfortably belly up to the bar and consume much ale. The stools were generally constructed from oak or another hardwood. The stools were firmly balanced upon 4 legs that were each attached to the underside of the stool seat a few inches towards the centre from each corner. As you can imagine, having a sturdy base of support was an important element in early bar furniture.
30 bar stools are commonly used for a raised eating surface in the 40 to 42 inch height range. Many homes and apartments today are built with a standard 36 high counter, then have a back splash and raised eating area. In most circumstances, if the eating area is HIGHER than your standard kitchen counter, you will need a 30 stool. 34 and larger bar stools are used for counters that exceed 42 in height. Please double check your measurements before ordering a 34 seat height. These are common enough for manufacturers to produce them, but most customers will need a bar stool in the 24 to 30 range. 2. Arms or Armless, Back or Backless? Stools that will be used frequently or for long periods of time (dining, game rooms, commercial bars, etc.) should typically include arms AND backs to increase comfort and decrease stress on your back and shoulders.
Look at the length of the breakfast bar and from that work out how many stool will fit comfortably along it. Bear in mind that people will swivel on the stools and knees will knock if they are too close together. Most of our stools are quite wide and they all include a swivel feature. Some stools have arms rests. These rests often are quite high and can catch on or damage the bar especially on swivel stools. If you want arm rests or swivel features ensure that the height of the stools is less than the height of the breakfast bar. High back bar stools can fit comfortably partially under the bar. If however you want you put the stool away chose a lower back bar stool.
Bar stools are becoming a must-have piece of home furniture and are quickly making their way into homes all across the world. With many homes having bar height counters or even a built-in bar, the demand for high quality bar stools is now greater than ever. Many office furniture manufacturers are catching on to this trend and have begun mass producing many different makes and models. With the wide selection available, there are a number of factors to consider before making the splurge to purchase multiple stools. Price - The most common misconception about bar stools is that because of their large size they will be expensive, however this preconceived notion is more fiction than fact. There are plenty available that are both affordable and durable, if you know what to look for in advance. Many home furniture stores will mark up their prices on bar stools knowing that once they have you in their door they have a better chance of selling to you on the spot then you having to go through the trouble of driving to other home furniture stores to compare pricing.

Even if you plan to purchase a bar stool that is pre-assembled, ask the salesperson if it is an RTA bar stool. Many retailers will pre-assemble the bar stool and sell it at a perceived UNBELIEVABLE PRICE. Look for bolts holding legs and other parts together. Avoid these bar stools if they are going to be used on a continuing basis. Nicer metal bar stools typically have all-welded frames. The only bolts you may see hold the seat to the swivel mechanism and there may be a few screws holding the seat pad to the metal frame. This type of construction is far more sturdy than RTA stools.
